Cursor Launches Origin Code Hosting Platform Amid GitHub Outage to Target Niche in AI Coding Competition

Cursor launched its own code hosting platform, Origin, for paid users. Approximately 3.5 hours after the launch, a global GitHub outage lasting 6 hours and 42 minutes occurred, with PR and API error rates approaching 20%, significantly degrading service quality. This coincidental timing led to a surge in developer community interest in Cursor's new platform.

Origin is located in the 'Codebase' tab within Cursor and supports core features provided by existing forges, such as Git-based repository management, permission settings, checks, and merges. A notable feature is that AI agents can manipulate code and Pull Requests within the same interface. Developers can instruct agents within the editor to modify PRs by delivering review comments or to push branches.

Cursor adopted a compatibility strategy to facilitate easy migration to the new platform while maintaining existing development workflows. From launch day, it integrated with Vercel, Depot, and Buildkite, allowing existing GitHub Actions workflows to run without changes. Through Vercel, teams can build pipelines that generate preview deployments for each PR and deploy to production upon merge.

This approach focuses on lowering adoption barriers by providing a 'second window' for existing code, eliminating the need for teams to rewrite build systems or retrain engineers.
