New MCP Roadmap - Five Focus Areas for the Future

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) core maintenance team has released an updated roadmap outlining the direction for future specification releases. This roadmap focuses on the following five priority areas:

• Agent Messaging Primitives: Standardize Tasks, subscriptions, and server-initiated events (webhooks/channels) for long-running loops and streaming processing beyond request-response patterns.
• HTTP Native Transport Integration and Enhancement: Treat remote MCP servers identically to standard HTTP workloads to improve infrastructure compatibility, and unify transport methods by supporting Streamable HTTP for local servers.
• Agent Authentication and Enterprise Security: Standardize identity verification and delegation for agents running in cloud workloads by leveraging DPoP, Workload Identity Federation, and ID-JAG instead of browser-based approval.
• Primitive Improvements: Introduce a progressive discovery mechanism to reduce performance degradation caused by long tool lists and standardize the contract for handling tool call results.
• SDK Developer Experience Enhancement: Improve the ergonomic design and documentation quality of SDKs for each platform and language to reduce friction when agents generate code.

SEPs (Specification Enhancement Proposals) corresponding to these priority areas are more likely to be adopted through visible review.
