Cloudflare Migrates Blog to EmDash Applying Customer Zero Principle

Cloudflare recently migrated its blog to EmDash. EmDash is a content management system (CMS) optimized for Astro and the Cloudflare environment. Following the 'Customer Zero' principle, Cloudflare uses its own infrastructure as the first test subject to verify product stability.

In pre-migration testing, EmDash showed no major issues in basic usability tasks such as creating posts, scheduling publications, and adding media. However, improvements were needed in large-scale media processing, localization, SEO, and the UX (user experience) of the admin editor. Notably, limitations of early versions were revealed, such as the scheduling feature only functioning correctly in v0.19.0.

Performance testing was conducted using k6. It simulated normal load (75 RPS) and spike traffic exceeding 5,000 RPS, applying scenarios for steep increase (Ramp), reaching limits (Breakpoint), and sudden surges (Burst). Evaluation was based on availability (less than 0.01% 5xx errors) and latency (P95 500ms, P99 1000ms).

The final production architecture is as follows:

• Running EmDash on Cloudflare Worker
• Applying new Workers Cache (first major site case)
• Using an EmDash object cache based on Workers KV, developed specifically for Cloudflare
