OpenAI Restores 5-Hour Limit for Codex and Work for ChatGPT Plus Users

OpenAI announced that it will reinstate the 5-hour usage limits for Codex and ChatGPT Work for Plus subscribers, which had been temporarily lifted over the past few weeks. This measure will take effect starting tomorrow (the 25th).

The reasons for restoring this limit are as follows:

• Compute load management: To distribute server load through the 5-hour limit, ensuring ample weekly usage capacity.
• User experience improvement: Since Plus plan users are primarily casual or new users, this prevents situations where they accidentally exhaust their weekly limits and experience confusion.

Users who reach the limit can wait until the next cycle begins or purchase additional credits. OpenAI also occasionally offers free resets through specific promotions or referrals.

Meanwhile, Pro ($100) and Pro ($200) subscribers will not be subject to the 5-hour limit for the coming months, while Enterprise and Edu accounts operate on a separate credit-based system.
