When Code Becomes Abundant

The economic structure of software development is fundamentally changing. As LLMs become capable of generating cheap and reliable code, code production itself is no longer the primary constraint.

At its June Transcend event, GitLab unveiled source control for machine-scale concurrency, GitLab Orbit (a context graph spanning the software lifecycle), and agent identity and policy governance. This aligns with Anthropic's assertion that 'code is no longer the bottleneck.'

When code becomes abundant, what becomes scarce is Trust. Trust depends not on the model itself, but on the context, verification, governance, and evidence surrounding it. Companies such as Stripe, Spotify, and Amplitude are already experiencing this shift in production environments.

Therefore, enterprises need a durable layer that is not tied to specific vendors or clouds. As agents encode an organization's workflows and expertise, those assets should belong to the organization itself, not to the model provider.
