Perplexity Launches Fully Local AI Agent 'Portable Computer' in Partnership with Nvidia

Perplexity has launched Portable Computer, an AI agent platform that runs entirely locally on hardware users already own, in partnership with Nvidia. The product supports Nvidia DGX Spark desktop supercomputers and Linux machines equipped with Nvidia RTX GPUs, keeping models, user files, and task data on the device to avoid cloud costs.

Local AI Stack Integration and User Experience

Existing local AI environments required complex setup, including downloading model weights, building inference servers, and integrating tools. In contrast, Portable Computer significantly simplifies the setup process by packaging local models, agent harnesses, inference engines, tools, app connectors, and security sandboxes into a single system. All tasks start on the device by default, and the system only requests user permission when sending data to cloud frontier models.

Real-World Demo and Strategic Significance

The demo showcased running a 27-billion-parameter Qwen model on a DGX Spark to analyze sensitive financial documents (such as 1099 forms) locally and identify unnecessary fees. Cloud credit consumption remained at 0 throughout the process. Nvidia assessed that this announcement marks the tipping point where local AI transitions from a hobbyist stage to a practical tool, aiming to boost sales of the relevant hardware.
