Amazon Open-Sources Kiro Crew

Amazon has open-sourced Kiro Crew, a new component of 'Kiro', an AI coding tool developed as a replacement for Amazon Q Developer, under the Apache 2.0 license. Kiro Crew is a 'chat-first' client similar to Codex or the Agents pane in VS Code, and has already been adopted by more than 39,000 developers within Amazon.

Key Features and Tech Stack

• Technical Architecture: Built on React and Python, it can run locally or in a remote browser. Internally, it connects to the Kiro CLI via ACP (Agent Communication Protocol) to perform model inference.
• Features: Supports scheduled tasks, subagents, importing data from other clients, browser/computer control, skill management, and integrations with Slack/Discord/Teams.

Limitations and Future Outlook

Currently, Kiro Crew does not natively support providers other than the Kiro subscription service. This is analyzed as either Amazon intentionally excluding external model compatibility or not having implemented it yet. However, since it is an open-source project, community contributions can add support for external providers, and third-party patches already exist. While there are initial bugs such as a non-smooth installation process, lack of model switching functionality, and tool call errors in some models, there is significant room for future improvement.
