Recently, developers have been building highly profitable products using Mistral AI's models, but this has not sufficiently contributed to Mistral AI's independent research and growth. To address this, Mistral AI is introducing the Mistral AI Non-Production License (MNPL).
The MNPL serves the following roles:
- Allows developers to use the technology for non-commercial purposes and support research
- Ensures that those building businesses on top of Mistral AI's technology grow in a way that is fair and sustainable for all parties
Codestral was released today as the first model under the new license. This decision aims to balance the principle of openness with the responsibility of business growth.
In addition, Mistral AI will continue to release models and code under the Apache 2.0 license, and plans to gradually integrate the Apache 2.0 lineup and the MNPL lineup going forward.
