ChatGPT for Excel

ChatGPT for Excel has been released in beta with spreadsheet creation, analysis, and editing capabilities.

• Starting from a blank sheet or opening an existing workbook, you can describe your requirements in natural language, and ChatGPT will build a formatted sheet along with formulas.
• It reads data across multiple tabs and formulas, performing summarization, pattern discovery, formula error checking, and error correction.
• Before making changes, it explains what it's going to do, shows the referenced cells linked to the edits, and only edits after receiving permission.
• The workflow happens directly inside Excel, letting you build, analyze, and update workbooks through a conversational panel.

This is available to ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, Teachers, K-12 users and Pro/Plus users outside the EU. Install it from Excel's Add-ins, then open ChatGPT from the ribbon at the top of the workbook and sign in.

Example use cases include:

• Building a personal expense tracker from bank/card statements
• Getting an explanation of the cause of an error in a specific cell
• Getting spending pattern analysis and budget ideas
• Grouping survey responses by theme and summarizing key insights
• Creating a project tracker
• Summarizing trends across multiple tabs and finding outliers
• Doing data cleanup such as standardization, label cleanup, and deduplication
• Getting formulas explained and receiving suggestions for clearer alternatives
• Updating a table for new assumptions and summarizing the changes

However, there are some Excel features it doesn't yet support.

• Office Scripts, Power Query, Pivot/Data Model
• data validation, named ranges manager
• slicers, timelines
• External connection management, some advanced charting features, VBA macros

For large workbooks, only part of the data may be processed due to context limits. Also, since this feature is in beta, results may be incomplete or incorrect, so formulas, calculations, and summaries should always be reviewed.

Data is kept separate from regular ChatGPT conversations, and conversations within Excel are not synced with ChatGPT chat history. Uploads support up to 20 attachments, up to 25MB per file, and app connections from your ChatGPT account can also be used.
