Mozilla has unveiled Thunderbolt, an open-source workspace that makes it easier for organizations to attach self-hosted AI infrastructure.

The core idea is handling chat, search, and research in one place, while letting you choose whichever models and tools you want to use.

• Model choice: Supports commercial models, open-source models, and even local models
• Data integration: Integrates with deepset Haystack, MCP servers, and ACP agents
• Automation: Daily briefings, topic monitoring, report generation, and schedule-based task triggers
• Multi-platform: Native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, alongside the web
• Security: Supports self-deployment, optional E2EE, and device-level access control

The code is open on GitHub, licensed under MPL 2.0. Mozilla's MZLA Technologies also mentioned enterprise licensing on top of this.

Phoronix noted that while the features themselves are interesting, it's a shame they chose the name Thunderbolt, which is already widely used in other fields.
