Anthropic Releases Report on How Educators Use Claude

Anthropic has released a new report analyzing usage patterns of Claude.ai among higher education professionals. The analysis was conducted based on approximately 74,000 anonymized conversations from higher education professionals worldwide, and was carried out in collaboration with Northeastern University to understand the actual state of AI adoption in educational settings.

Key use cases are as follows:

• Curriculum Development (57%): Creating class materials and writing syllabi
• Academic Research: Research assistance and data organization
• Student Assessment: Grading assignments and providing feedback

Educators actively use Automation for simple, repetitive administrative tasks (financial management, record-keeping, etc.), while using AI as a supporting tool through Enhancement for tasks requiring creativity or contextual understanding (lesson design, student counseling, writing research proposals, etc.).

Of particular note is that educators are directly building customized educational tools—such as chemistry simulations, automated grading rubrics, and data visualization dashboards—using Claude Artifacts. In the case of grading tasks, despite concerns about AI's effectiveness, approximately 48.9% of actual usage was through automation, where the AI directly performed the task.
