Anthropic Releases Education Report on How College Students Use Claude

Anthropic analyzed about 1 million anonymized student conversations that occurred on Claude.ai and released an education report containing real-world AI usage patterns in higher education settings. Of these, 574,740 conversations related to academics and research were extracted and analyzed.

The key findings are as follows:

• STEM fields, particularly Computer Science majors, are adopting AI most actively. CS majors account for 5.4% of U.S. degrees but represent 36.8% of Claude conversations.
• Student interactions were evenly distributed across four patterns: Direct Problem Solving, Direct Output Creation, Collaborative Problem Solving, and Collaborative Output Creation.

Students primarily use Claude to create or improve educational content (39.3%) and to solve technical explanations or assignments (33.5%). This aligns with higher-order cognitive functions according to Bloom's Taxonomy, and Claude is also used for purposes such as data analysis (11.0%) and research design support (6.5%).

This study used Clio, an automated tool that summarizes and analyzes conversation content while protecting personal information.
