Plan to Cover Electricity Rate Increases

Anthropic has decided to directly bear the electricity rate increase costs caused by its data center operations. Power demand for training frontier AI models is surging on a gigawatt (GW) scale, and the U.S. AI sector is projected to need at least 50GW of power capacity over the coming years.

Data centers can raise costs for consumers in two ways: by incurring grid infrastructure upgrade costs, and by driving up prices through increased demand. To prevent this, Anthropic is implementing the following concrete measures.

• Bearing 100% of Grid Infrastructure Costs: Anthropic covers the full cost of grid upgrades needed for data center connections, funding this through its own monthly electricity bill increases.
• Securing New Power and Price Protection: The company secures new generation capacity to match data center demand, and offsets price increases caused by rising demand until the new generation comes online.
• Reducing Grid Load: Investing in curtailment systems that reduce power usage during peak hours, along with grid optimization tools.
• Community Investment: Alongside job creation, managing environmental impact through measures such as adopting water-efficient cooling technologies.

In addition, Anthropic supports federal policy reforms to accelerate transmission grid development and grid interconnection, and plans to work toward making AI infrastructure a catalyst for national energy investment.
