Anthropic Economic Index

Anthropic has launched the Anthropic Economic Index to understand how AI is affecting the labor market and economy.

This initial report is based on millions of anonymized conversations from Claude.ai, providing unprecedented data on how AI is being integrated into real-world tasks in the modern economy. The research team made the dataset used in the analysis open source, enabling researchers to conduct follow-up studies based on it.

The key findings are as follows:

• Task Concentration: Current AI usage is concentrated in software development and technical writing tasks. About 36% of occupations use AI in 25% or more of their related tasks, while about 4% use AI in 75% or more of their tasks.
• Augmentation vs Automation: AI is used more for augmentation (57%), assisting and enhancing human capabilities, than for automation (43%), directly performing tasks.
• Differences by Income Level: AI usage was more active in middle-to-high income occupations such as programmers and data scientists. In contrast, both the lowest and highest income occupations showed relatively lower usage rates.

This research analyzed at the task level rather than by entire occupations, allowing for a more precise understanding of how AI is being integrated across the economy.
