Reclaiming Identity Through Voice in Africa: Senses Hub x ElevenLabs

Millions of people with speech impairments around the world rely on AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) devices, but existing models are mostly based on US or UK English, making them sound foreign and robotic to African users. This goes beyond a mere technical gap, undermining users' sense of identity and social belonging.

Nairobi-based Senses Hub is partnering with the ElevenLabs Impact Program to develop localized voice models that reflect the accents and cultural context of the African region. The project will start in East Africa—including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda—and gradually expand.

The key features leveraging ElevenLabs's deep learning technology are as follows:

• Voice Cloning: High-precision voice reproduction from minimal audio samples
• Localized accents: Language and accent support that reflects regional diversity
• Voice Donor System: Generates custom voices using volunteers' voices for users who don't have existing recordings

This technology is expected to help people who have lost their voice due to stroke, ALS, cerebral palsy, and other conditions communicate with a natural voice that carries their identity, and to restore their dignity.
