Honoring Veterans and Their Voices: The Story of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Brittingham

Diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Brittingham completely lost his voice as his condition worsened. Existing mechanical speech synthesis technology failed to capture his identity, causing great difficulty in communicating with his family.

Through the nonprofit organization Bridging Voice, he was introduced to ElevenLabs' Professional Voice Clone technology. Built by collecting past videos and audio samples, this AI model precisely recreated Lieutenant Colonel Brittingham's voice, speech patterns, and intonation from before he became ill.

This technology goes beyond simple speech synthesis, helping patients maintain emotional bonds with their families and preserve their identity. In particular, given research findings that pilots have a higher incidence of ALS than the general population, the importance of improving accessibility through technology is being further emphasized.
