OpenAI and WAN-IFRA Announce AI Program to Support Independent Media in Ukraine

OpenAI, WAN-IFRA (World Association of News Publishers), and AIRPPU (Association of Independent Regional Publishers of Ukraine) announced a new collaborative program to build AI capabilities and strengthen sustainability for independent media in Ukraine. This initiative focuses on helping news publishers accelerate innovation and secure resilience amidst conflict and economic pressure.

The program consists of two main tracks. First, the Newsroom AI track supports news organizations selected by AIRPPU in developing and implementing AI-based newsroom projects. Next, the Business Transformation track assists with commercial and operational transformation projects leveraging AI.

Specific execution plans include two detailed activities.

• Newsroom AI Masterclass Series: Starting August 5, 2026, international experts will share practical knowledge and case studies on editorial workflows, audience engagement, revenue generation, and responsible AI adoption.
• Newsroom AI Catalyst: Scheduled for launch on September 17, 2026, this will provide in-depth hands-on support to 10 Ukrainian news organizations. It supports identifying high-impact use cases, developing implementation roadmaps, and piloting customized AI solutions, with participating organizations receiving OpenAI API credits.

Leaders from each organization emphasized the significance of this collaboration. Oksana Brovko, CEO of AIRPPU, stated that AI would give journalists back time to focus on the core work of journalism. Stig Ørskov, CEO of WAN-IFRA, explained that independent media plays a crucial role in protecting the public record during war. Tom Rubin, an executive at OpenAI, added that sharing practical knowledge and providing technical support would contribute to a stronger and more sustainable future for independent media in Ukraine.
