OpenAI has temporarily paused new subscriptions to its $200/month Pro plan, citing infrastructure strain caused by a surge in demand for its latest AI model, Astra. Product lead Thibault Sottiaux noted that the Pro plan is the tier causing the greatest load on the system, describing the pause as a minimal measure to maintain service quality for existing users.

This action follows the launch of Astra on September 3, which was promoted as a generational leap in reasoning, coding, and computer use, driving demand to unprecedented levels. OpenAI continues to offer its API and lower-priced Go and Plus plans, but has not disclosed the duration of the Pro sign-up pause or specific demand figures.
