Emerald AI, Google, and NVIDIA Launch AEMA Alliance to Secure Power Flexibility

Emerald AI, Google, and NVIDIA have launched the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA), aiming to build data centers that dynamically manage power usage in response to grid conditions. This is the first collaborative body to address the power constraints that are a key bottleneck in AI infrastructure expansion and to maximize the efficiency of existing grid infrastructure.

The Need for Power Flexibility

Traditional interconnection procedures were designed assuming static power demand, but AI data centers must function as flexible loads that can intelligently respond when the grid is unstable. AEMA supports the transition of data centers into controllable grid resources through computing workload shifting, battery discharge, and parallel generation. This enables more efficient utilization of grid capacity, demand reduction during system stress, and the delay or avoidance of costly infrastructure upgrades.

Technology-Neutral, Performance-Based Principles

AEMA adopts a technology-neutral and performance-based approach, independent of specific hardware or software. The alliance ensures reliability through the following principles:

• Pre-defined Requirements: Clearly defines ride-through capabilities during temporary grid disturbances, curtailment capabilities when necessary, and emergency response obligations before facility connection.
• Standardization: Standardizes technical requirements, performance metrics, and methods for sharing operational data.
• Rapid Interconnection: Provides a risk-adjusted fast-track interconnection path for customers who make credible flexibility commitments.
• Cost Allocation: Allocates interconnection costs based on actual system impacts and benefits (such as avoided upgrades).

Ecosystem Collaboration and Future Outlook

AEMA spans the entire computing and power value chain, including AI platforms, infrastructure providers, data center operators, power producers, utilities, and regional grid operators. NVIDIA and Emerald AI are already building AI factories that react to grid conditions in real time. Through this, AEMA plans to unite the technology, energy, and policy communities to develop a model deployable across the United States and advocate for relevant policies.
