AWS Elastic Beanstalk Launches 'Cluster Mode' Based on EKS

AWS Elastic Beanstalk has launched a new Cluster Mode based on Amazon EKS. This mode is designed to allow multiple applications to share infrastructure while being managed under a single operational baseline, reducing per-application costs and minimizing operational complexity as the portfolio grows.

Key Features and Support

• Broad Language and Containerization Support: Supports Java, .NET, Python, Node.js, PHP, Ruby, Go, and more, with automatic containerization via Cloud Native Buildpacks without requiring a Dockerfile.
• Enterprise Compliance: Complies with HIPAA, PCI DSS, and SOC 1/2/3 requirements without additional configuration.
• Advanced Deployment and Observability: Offers traffic-splitting deployments, automatic rollback, event-based auto-scaling, AWS Secrets Manager integration, and native OpenTelemetry support.

Migration and Compatibility

The existing Standard Mode (EC2-based) remains fully supported, and both modes can run in parallel within the same Elastic Beanstalk application. Teams can verify compatibility using validation checks and then migrate environments incrementally, with no forced migration.

Cost and Recommendations

• Cost Structure: There is no additional cost for Cluster Mode itself, but charges apply for used resources such as the EKS control plane fee, EKS Auto Mode compute (approximately 12% premium over EC2), Amazon ECR, and CloudWatch.
• Recommended for Standard Mode: Existing Standard Mode is more suitable for Windows/.NET Framework (IIS) workloads and workloads with monthly spend under $500 (where EKS overhead cannot be offset).
