Google Releases 'Agent Substrate' for GKE: 10x AI Agent Density and Sub-500ms Restart

Google has released 'Agent Substrate', an open-source runtime designed for running AI agents at scale in GKE (Kubernetes Engine) environments. This solution provides 10x higher computing density compared to standard containers and allows sandbox restarts with latency under 500ms. It enhances security and credential protection through hardware isolation (Cloud Hypervisor microVMs or gVisor) and an egress proxy. Additionally, by leveraging Google Axion processors, it achieves up to 30% better price-performance ratio compared to competing clouds, with early design partners including Nous Research's Hermes agent. It is currently available as open source for non-production use, with production GA support available via an allowlist.
