Cohere and Aleph Alpha Sign Business Combination Agreement… Birth of a 'Sovereign AI' Company Headquartered in Canada and Germany

Cohere and Aleph Alpha have signed a definitive business combination agreement to build transatlantic sovereign AI solutions. The combined company will operate globally under the name Cohere, aiming to complete the transaction within the year subject to regulatory approvals.

Dual Headquarters Structure Based in Canada and Germany

The new organization will adopt a dual headquarters structure, maintaining headquarters, R&D centers, enterprise solutions, and public sector partnerships in both Canada and Germany. This integrates research expertise and technical infrastructure across both continents, expanding the total workforce to over 1,000 employees. Berlin and Toronto will serve as key hubs, while Aleph Alpha's Heidelberg office will continue to operate as a research center.

Leadership Integration and Sovereignty Strategy

Ilhan Scheer, former Co-CEO of Aleph Alpha, will join Cohere as COO, and Samuel Weinbach, former Co-CRO, will join as CRO, taking charge of organizational expansion and research technology development respectively. Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez stated the significance of this combination by saying, "We will provide an environment where you do not have to choose between AI performance and technological control."

Deepening Partnership with Schwarz Group

Collaboration with Schwarz Group will also be strengthened, with STACKIT, Schwarz Digits' sovereign cloud service, serving as the technical backbone for sovereign AI solutions. Christian Müller, CEO of Schwarz Digits, emphasized that this alliance will contribute to strengthening digital independence in Europe and Canada.
