Claude Code Redesigns Projects from 'Folders' to 'Conversations'… Beta Launch

Claude Code has launched a beta version of the Projects feature, redesigned from the traditional 'folder' concept to a 'conversation' model. Users simply set a goal, and Claude automatically manages task scoping, delegation, parallel thread coordination, output review, and result assembly.

Architecture and How It Works

A project consists of Threads that perform tasks and a Coordinator that orchestrates them. Each Thread is a Claude Code cloud session operating on a separate branch and copy of the repository, with the Coordinator organizing the overall work. Code duplication is resolved via merge conflicts, just like in standard PRs.

Each Thread uses subagents, loops, and workflows to further split delegated tasks, accelerating the completion of large assignments. All Threads add to and reference shared memory, eliminating the need for complex prompt engineering.

Context Memory and User Control

Claude remembers project details such as release schedule changes, reasons for excluding features, and items to check before modifying specific services. It can also adapt to the user's work and communication style, including check-in frequency, new thread initiation frequency, and update detail levels. Users can intervene during progress and check whether work continues even on mobile.

Accessibility and Limitations

The beta is currently available to a subset of Claude Pro/Max subscribers who use Claude Code cloud sessions and have no existing web/desktop projects. It will expand to more users on these plans within the next week, followed by a rollout to all Claude and Team/Enterprise plans. Since Projects run multiple threads simultaneously, with each thread operating as a full Claude Code session, users may reach usage limits faster.
