Terence Tao Introduces SAIR 'Open Math Model' Initiative, Calls for Participation in Building Open-Source Math AI Models

Terence Tao co-founded the nonprofit 'Science and AI Research (SAIR)' last year with private donors to support the responsible use of AI in mathematics and other scientific fields, independently of major AI companies. SAIR is currently negotiating with key partners from academia and industry to develop open-weight models and open-source tools for science. The 'SAIR Open Models' initiative invites the math community and supporters to build open-source models together, stating that models, code, and tools will be shared with the community under appropriate open licenses such as Apache 2.0, MIT, and CC BY 4.0. The initiative aims to make open models and reasonable computing resources a shared foundation for mathematical research.
