Alibaba Unveils 'Zhenwu V900' AI Chip Targeting 20GW Data Center Goal

Alibaba Group has unveiled the accelerator 'Zhenwu V900', regarded as the most powerful AI chip in China, through its subsidiary T-Head. CEO Eddie Wu stated that the chip offers three times the performance compared to the previous generation and supports frontier model training through clusters of up to 500,000 units.

Infrastructure Expansion and Investment Plans

To address the exponential increase in AI demand, Alibaba has set a goal to achieve 20GW of data center capacity by 2032. To this end, it plans to spend over $53 billion on expanding AI capabilities over the next three years, having raised approximately $10.2 billion through a follow-on stock offering in Hong Kong in August. It also plans to pursue an IPO for T-Head's chip design division to capitalize on interest in the AI accelerator market.

Pursuit of AGI and Model Development Strategy

Alibaba has established the pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) as a company directive and is strengthening its investments in hardware and infrastructure. The models currently under development are on the scale of 5 to 10 trillion parameters, far exceeding typical sizes, with a focus on handling longer and more complex tasks. This announcement was made just before the US-China summit, coinciding with a time when global AI issues, such as a White House dinner attended by the CEOs of NVIDIA and Microsoft, were coming to the forefront.
