3 Upcoming New Features Expected for NotebookLM

Google is preparing a large-scale update to NotebookLM that has been months in the making. This update centers on three key features that clearly show the direction the tool is evolving in.

The first is the Personal Preferences feature. It learns from the user's past interactions, conversations, and custom instructions to automatically adjust tone and technical depth to match how the user works.

The second is the Connectors feature. Similar to MCP (Model Context Protocol), this brings external data into notebooks, and it appears that integration will begin first with Google services such as Gmail, Drive, and Calendar.

The most notable feature is Canvas. Provided in the Studio panel, this feature generates customized outputs—such as interactive timelines, explanatory web pages, lightweight games, or visualization tools—based on source data. This represents an expansion beyond the existing infographic, slide deck, and mind map features.

These features are expected to provide an environment, through the integration of Gemini and NotebookLM, where users can work across their entire set of sources without needing to copy material between tools.
