The skills.sh registry reached one million agent skills in seven months, recording nearly 280 million installs. This growth rate significantly outpaces other developer platforms: GitHub took 27 months to reach one million repositories, while npm took more than nine years to hit one million packages.

Supply vs. Demand Dynamics

While the supply of skills leans heavily technical, with software engineering alone accounting for about a quarter of listings, demand is more distributed. Software engineering remains the largest category for installs at 18%, followed by agent workflows at 15%. However, categories like business operations, writing, and cloud infrastructure see higher installs per listing, with business operations skills drawing 74% more installs than the average.

Concentration and Portability

Install activity is highly concentrated, with the top 1.2% of skills accounting for 94% of all installs. Despite this, no single skill dominates, as the most-installed skill captures less than 1% of total volume. A key driver of this distribution is portability: cross-industry skills account for 87.5% of installs and receive 3.6 times as many installs per listing as industry-specific skills.

Future Outlook

The report suggests that as general expertise becomes baseline via public skills, value will shift to company-specific judgment. The measure of a skill's quality is expected to move from popularity metrics like install counts to effectiveness benchmarks that prove an agent performs better with the skill than without it.
