Cloudflare: Automated Traffic to Hit 1,000x Human Traffic in Five Years

Cloudflare’s 2026 Annual Founders’ Letter highlights a fundamental shift in internet usage, noting that automated traffic surpassed human traffic in May 2026, pulling forward previous forecasts by six months. The company projects that if current trends continue, automated traffic will reach 1,000 times human traffic within five years, driven by the explosion of AI agents and crawlers rather than a decline in human activity.

The Rise of AI Creators and Traffic Imbalance

The letter attributes the recent web growth to a new cohort of creators using vibe coding tools, with more than 7 million developers now building on Cloudflare’s platform. However, this surge in agent activity creates a tragedy of the commons scenario where sites bear the cost of serving agents without compensation. For example, an agent might scan 1,000 restaurant menus to recommend one, leaving the other 999 sites to shoulder the load without gaining business.

Risks to Small Businesses and New Entrants

Cloudflare warns that AI agents favor established entities with the most data, potentially stifling new entrants and leading to market consolidation. Unlike humans, agents do not value convenience or personal relationships, meaning small businesses may lose visibility to larger incumbents. The company emphasizes the need for a future where 500,000 AI companies can thrive, rather than a landscape dominated by a few mega corporations.

Cloudflare’s Response: Efficiency and Monetization

To address these challenges, Cloudflare is introducing measures to reduce unnecessary load, noting that more than half of what good bots fetch has not changed since their last visit. The company is working to ensure crawlers only fetch new content and is launching a mechanism to allow content owners to get paid when agents use their data. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to support an internet ecosystem that remains open to new creators and small businesses.
