Stripe Link Adds Incremental Authorization and Purchase Protections for AI Agents

Stripe is expanding Link’s wallet for agents to support the growing volume of AI-driven shopping, noting that agentic purchases increased 38x over the past month. The update introduces three key improvements: incremental authorization for checkout, financial insights for better recommendations, and purchase protections for consumer peace of mind.

Handling Checkout Complexity

Agents often face changing final prices due to taxes or shipping. Link now supports incremental authorization, allowing agents to request a higher approved amount if the final price exceeds the original limit. This prevents the need to restart a purchase or place a second hold on a consumer’s card. Additionally, when payment obstacles arise, Link provides specific guidance, such as URLs for 3D Secure challenges or prompts to select an alternative payment method.

Personalized Recommendations via Financial Insights

Agent builders can now access Link’s financial insights to analyze consumer purchase history with permission. Powered by Financial Connections, Stripe’s open banking solution, this feature gives agents access to transaction data from more than 12,000 financial institutions, covering over 97% of US bank accounts. Agents can use this data to identify frequent stores, set appropriate budgets, and make informed product suggestions, such as recommending a specific retailer based on past buying habits.

Consumer Protections and Future Controls

To build trust, consumers may now be eligible for free purchase protections when an agent uses Link for eligible transactions. Coverage includes accidental damage, lost items, price drops, and no-fee returns. Muse is the first AI agent to offer these protections through Link. Looking ahead, Stripe plans to introduce spending controls that allow consumers to set budgets for agents to execute tasks, such as buying limited-release items, without approving each individual transaction.
