OpenAI Introduces Sign in with ChatGPT for External App Access

OpenAI has introduced Sign in with ChatGPT, an identity-provider option allowing users to leverage their ChatGPT account credentials to access supported external applications. This feature enables users to create, link, or access accounts on participating partner sites or via the ChatGPT plugin directory.

Availability and Partners

The feature is available globally to authenticated ChatGPT users, including those in Enterprise organizations, though access depends on specific admin settings. It is currently live on OpenAI Academy and ChatGPT Sites, with a rollout underway for select plugins and partners. Initial participating partners include Airtable, GitLab, HubSpot, Notion, Supabase, and Vercel.

Data Privacy and Sharing

During identity sign-in, external applications receive only the user's name, email address, and profile picture. The system does not independently share ChatGPT conversations, memory, files, tokens, or billing information. Any additional data access, such as delegated access to connected apps or ChatGPT Ads, requires a separate authorization flow and explicit user approval.

Some partners allow users to apply ChatGPT subscription rates and limits to their tools. This subscription sharing is optional and distinct from identity sign-in; it does not grant the partner tool access to user conversations or memory. Users retain control over how much usage a partner tool can consume.

Organization Management

For organizations, Sign in with ChatGPT is enabled by default unless an explicit identity policy restricts it. Global admins manage these permissions in the External access section of the OpenAI Admin Console. During the admin preview for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise customers, delegated access for ChatGPT Sites and Ads is off by default and requires explicit admin approval.
