fastpotify: Rust-based Spotify client replaces 1GB app with 100MB RAM usage

This alternative alleviates the 600MB–1GB memory burden of the Spotify desktop app. Written in Rust and egui, this client excludes the browser engine to reduce RAM usage to 100–250MB. With a fast startup time of under 1 second and a lightweight interface, it provides a comfortable listening experience even on low-spec devices.

It supports gapless playback up to 320kbps via librespot and registers as a Spotify Connect device, enabling control from other devices and network speaker discovery. It includes a Winamp mini player mode and the MilkDrop visualizer for a retro visual experience. MilkDrop, which automatically downloads over 10,000 presets, runs in a separate window to display visual effects synchronized with the music.

Keyboard shortcuts are applied to all major features to reduce reliance on the mouse. On Linux, it supports the MPRIS protocol, allowing control via media keys and the shell. On macOS and Windows, playback state changes, volume adjustment, and track navigation can be performed remotely via terminal commands. It resides in the system tray, and background playback continues even when the window is closed.

It is suitable for Spotify Premium subscribers who want to play music on their main device. Free accounts are limited to search and library browsing, while actual audio streaming requires Premium permissions. To ensure account safety, it maintains DRM and does not include ad-blocking or track ripping features, avoiding the risk of account suspension that may occur with existing clients.
