Kakao Releases Detailed Client Role Guide for 2022 Summer Internship

Ahead of the 2022 summer internship recruitment, Kakao released detailed information on the work content and development processes for four Client technology roles (iOS, Android, Front-End, Windows). Each role deals with areas directly experienced by users and emphasizes a collaborative culture that involves participating from the planning stage to enhance service completeness.

iOS Development

With the share of iOS users in South Korea rising to approximately 25%, it has emerged as an important platform. Developers build services for Apple devices, perform maintenance and crash monitoring, and modernize legacy code. In particular, KakaoTalk aims to complete its transition from Objective-C to Swift within this year. Interns are required to have knowledge of UIKit, AutoLayout, Swift, and server communication.

Android Development

Participants work on real-time call services such as KakaoTalk Voice Talk/Face Talk or develop new apps. Advantages include accessibility across various devices (foldable, rollable, etc.) and ease of low-level control. During projects, modularization by function—such as network, rendering, and camera—is prioritized, and understanding of C, C++, and Java languages along with a collaborative attitude are key evaluation criteria.

Front-End Development

Developers work on web pages for Daum, Cafe, and other services, as well as SPAs within KakaoTalk and desktop apps. They can freely discuss and select from various technology stacks based on HTML/CSS and JavaScript. A feedback culture through code reviews and retrospectives is well-established, and last year, building a diagram editor was assigned as an internship task.

Windows Development

The team operates three services: Talk PC version, PotPlayer, and Melon Player, and is currently focused on developing a new Talk PC to address technical debt. The primary language used is C++, while QML and JavaScript are utilized for the new UI. Developers can gain experience with high-volume services used by ten million people daily, and interns receive feedback through pair programming and code reviews.
