Kakao Reveals 6-Week Technical Onboarding Program for 2022 New Developers

Kakao has revealed a 3-stage onboarding program for new developers in 2022. The program consists of Pre-onboarding, Common onboarding, and Technical onboarding. In particular, the technical onboarding runs for a total of 6 weeks, led by role-specific instructors, with senior crew members conducting code reviews.

In Pre-onboarding, new hires are immediately assigned to departments and roles to familiarize themselves with colleagues and services in advance, and share the company vision through conversations with the CEO and CTO. Common onboarding lasts for one week, covering topics such as 'Act for Yourself' and 'Trust to Trust', and includes problem definition workshops, technical writing, and code review case studies.

Technical onboarding is divided into four specific roles: Server, Front-End, iOS, and Android, combining self-directed learning with joint learning. Participants solve weekly missions to develop the habit of writing test code, and strengthen collaboration skills through pair programming and daily meetings. This process focuses not only on acquiring technical skills but also on forming developer habits for writing good code structures and robust code that flexibly responds to user requirements.
