Kakao Opens Beta of Open Source Management Service 'Olive Platform'

Kakao has launched the beta version of Olive Platform, an open source management system previously used internally, now made available externally. This service integrates with GitHub projects to perform real-time scans, analyzing licenses and obligations of used open source components to provide reports.

Core Features and Operations

Olive goes beyond simply listing open source components, focusing on proactively blocking license violation risks.

• Real-time Scanning and Reporting: Integrates with GitHub accounts to automatically detect open source components within projects and visualizes legal risks, such as code disclosure obligations when Copyleft licenses like GPL are applied.
• Simple Check: Allows users to quickly check open source usage status by uploading only package manager configuration files.
• Verified Data Sharing: Registered open source data undergoes review by Kakao's open source management team to ensure accuracy, and users can directly register components to share data.

Development Background and Tech Stack

Since establishing an open source management organization in 2014, Kakao has conducted license verification for all services and SDKs, starting with KakaoTalk. Olive was developed to overcome the limitations of the existing tool 'Hermes' and to enable developer-driven verification.

• Technical Architecture: The backend is built with Spring Boot, and the frontend with Angular, establishing a Kubernetes-based CI/CD environment.
• Development Process: Proceeded in three stages: prototyping, internal system launch, and external service launch. During the internal launch phase, issues with migrating data from the existing system and complex UI configurations were resolved, and Agile development using Jira and a code review culture were established.

Future Plans and Expected Impact

Currently in Beta, Olive primarily supports GitHub personal repositories and Public Repositories. Future plans include expanding support for Private repositories, multi-project management, and policy application by deployment environment. Through this service, Kakao aims to help small-scale developers easily comply with open source license obligations and improve verification accuracy based on shared data.
