Kakao Presents Cloud Technologies and KaaS Case Studies at Open Infrastructure Days Korea 2019

Kakao participated as a sponsor in Open Infrastructure & Cloud Native Days Korea 2019, held in Seoul from July 18 to 19, 2019, sharing its cloud technologies and operational experience. The conference was organized by a coalition of domestic open-source communities including OpenStack, Kubernetes, Ceph, and OCP. Kakao showcased its infrastructure capabilities through a keynote, multiple technical sessions, and a demonstration booth.

Cloud Strategy and Technical Presentations

Gong Yong-jun, Lead of the Cloud Computing Part at Kakao, addressed current issues in the cloud sector during the keynote, including AI cloud service-ification, heterogeneous clouds, and open-source licensing issues, and analyzed the impact of open infrastructure on cloud evolution. He also presented a vision for how Kakao plans to apply these open-source trends to future cloud services.

The technical sessions covered the following specific case studies and technologies:

• Kubernetes Scheduler Deep Dive: Engineer Kim Dong-jin from KakaoBank explained the operation, algorithms, and extension methods of the Kubernetes scheduler.
• Containerization Without Dockerfile: Engineer Jeong Won-cheon demonstrated how to analyze source code and containerize it without a Dockerfile using Knative and buildpacks, and run it on a Kubernetes cluster.
• Kubernetes as a Service (KaaS): Engineer Hong Seok-yong shared the trial-and-error experiences and architectural improvements involved in providing hundreds of Kubernetes clusters as a service on Kakao's private cloud, alongside the 'Kakao T Taxi' case study.
• Automated Monitoring (KOCOON): Engineer Im Seong-guk shared the background and operational experience of the KOCOON system, developed to automate monitoring for large-scale Kubernetes clusters from existing monitoring systems.

Booth Operations and Future Plans

At the Kakao booth, demonstrations of its proprietary cloud platforms 9rum and Krane were conducted, along with a recruitment Q&A session. Some attendees asked why platforms with restricted external access were being exhibited. In response, Kakao mentioned plans to open-source key products, suggesting the possibility of future external releases. Kakao plans to continue sponsoring developer communities and giving technical presentations.
