Focusing on Building a Solid Foundation

Replit has grown rapidly, recently operating as many as 120,000 concurrent containers, establishing itself as a global collaborative coding environment that goes beyond a simple online REPL. However, as its scale expanded, technical issues arose, such as slowdowns and frequent crashes in repl, disconnections, and infrastructure strain on the existing Classroom product.

As a result, Replit has decided to temporarily pause new feature development and focus on rebuilding the service's Foundations. Through improvements already made, editing and execution speed have been increased, and as an early result, repl crashes have been reduced by more than 80%.

The major changes going forward are as follows:

• Temporarily pausing development of always-on repls (an alpha feature)
• Halting the addition of new languages until dependency issues in Polygott (the base OS image) are resolved
• Discontinuing the existing Classroom product and transitioning to Teams for Education
• Structurally modernizing the website and cleaning up unmanaged sections

This decision is an essential process for building a more powerful and scalable platform going forward, and through it, Replit aims to provide a more stable and polished development environment.
