From Rejection to Recruitment: The Journey Toward Y Combinator

Replit's founder entered the startup world through Lisp and Paul Graham's essays, and began his career at Codecademy, a YC alum company.

During the process of preparing for a startup, he was rejected on his first application after a YC partner harshly criticized the online REPL as merely a 'toy' and not a startup.

But the founders didn't give up and pushed forward with Replit. Early on, they generated revenue through API sales, but struggled to raise funding due to scalability issues with the revenue model and low VC investment appetite in the devtool and edtech sectors.

Afterward, they secured investment from Bloomberg Beta and tried to stay 'Default Alive' by developing tools for computer science teachers to target the education market.

Eventually, after multiple YC rejections, a sudden contact from Sam Altman connected them with Paul Graham, which became the decisive turning point for Replit to gain YC's recognition.
