ChatGPT introduces workspace agents

On April 22, 2026, OpenAI unveiled workspace agents that teams can use together within ChatGPT. An evolution of the existing GPTs, these Codex-based agents perform complex work and long-running tasks—such as writing reports, coding tasks, and responding to messages—in the cloud on the team's behalf.

These agents operate within the organization's permissions and scope of control, and once built, a team can share them via ChatGPT or Slack and keep improving them. Example workflows presented include reviewing software requests, routing product feedback, generating weekly metrics reports, lead outreach, and 3rd-party risk management.

Setup begins under Agents in the ChatGPT sidebar, and templates are provided alongside it. Templates for Finance, sales, and marketing are included, along with links to OpenAI Academy and Help Center guidance.

Agents can chain together multiple steps using files, code, connected apps, and memory, and also support scheduled runs and deployment via Slack. Sensitive actions such as sending approvals, editing spreadsheets, sending emails, or adding calendar events may require pre-authorization.

Admin-facing features are also highlighted. In Enterprise and Edu, connected tools and task permissions can be controlled by group, and a Compliance API is provided to view configuration, update, and execution history. Workspace agents are available as a research preview on ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers, free of charge until May 6, 2026, after which credit-based pricing will apply.
