UK Police Officer Under Criminal Investigation for Fabricating Evidence with AI

An officer from the UK's Derbyshire Police is under criminal investigation on suspicion of using AI to generate evidence and obstructing judicial proceedings. This is the first case of its kind in the UK, and the officer has been removed from frontline duties while the investigation is ongoing.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is working with Derbyshire Police to review related cases suspected of involving AI-generated material, and will also cooperate with defense lawyers. Earlier, Alex Murray, head of the AI center at the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC), pointed to reliability issues with AI systems and ordered officers to stop using AI to draft witness statements.

Meanwhile, London's Metropolitan Police used Palantir AI software to analyze staff data, uncovering various forms of misconduct ranging from remote-work violations to corruption, and arrested 3 officers in the process.
