Automation

Codex automatically performs repetitive tasks using schedules and trigger conditions. Even without the user asking again, it returns at a set time to handle the task and leaves the results for later review.

Examples of use include the following.

• Writing a weekly review every Friday
• Generating a morning brief based on the previous day's work
• Summarizing the contents of a folder when new files are added
• Organizing weekly data exports
• Checking for missing or inconsistent information
• Generating recurring project status updates

Some automations can return to the same conversation and pick up the existing context. A good automation should be specific, repeatable, and easy to review, and when used locally, it works best while the laptop is awake and Codex is running. It's recommended to first narrow down exactly the desired behavior and output format through back-and-forth conversation, then switch to automation.
