OpenAI Apologizes for Not Reporting Account Before Shooting

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman issued a formal apology regarding the Tumbler Ridge school shooting in British Columbia, Canada, over the company's failure to notify police about a risky account it had detected beforehand.

In June of last year, OpenAI identified Jesse Van Rootselaar's account through its violence-related activity detection system, and subsequently banned the account for violating usage policy. However, at the time, the company determined that the account's activity did not meet the threshold for referral to law enforcement, and did not report it to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Altman expressed deep regret over the harm and loss suffered by the community, and acknowledged that a public apology was necessary.
