That Uncharted World

Starting July 6, I will be joining OpenAI as the head of the Strategic Futures team. This is a small, high-leverage team reporting directly to Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), whose core mission is frontier AI policymaking.

The main areas covered are as follows:

• Catastrophic risk and Recursive self-improvement
• Labor market impacts
• The relationship between frontier AI labs, governments (especially the U.S. federal government), and society

The team will focus not only on external policy proposals but also on building Internal governance. It will work closely with technical staff and the Preparedness team to accurately understand how AI technology is developing.

Frontier AI labs will become a new kind of institution, forming new relationships with society's existing institutions, and AI itself will come to serve as a new form of governance technology. Given this, I judged that key decisions on AI governance are likely to be made inside the labs themselves, and decided to join a lab internally in order to translate policy insights into action.

My personal analysis channel, Hyperdimensional, will continue to operate independently. Separate from my role at OpenAI, I have been guaranteed full intellectual independence for my personal writing, my activity on X (formerly Twitter), and my forthcoming book.
