Anthropic May Require ID Verification from Claude Users

Anthropic recently updated its privacy policy, announcing that in certain situations it may require Claude users to submit a government-issued ID to verify their age and identity.

This measure is intended to help users appeal when their account has been suspended on suspicion of misuse. If identity verification is initiated, users will need to upload a photo of their passport or driver's license, and the process may include taking a selfie or video to confirm identity. During this process, biometric data such as a facial geometry template may be collected.

Anthropic explained that this policy change does not apply to all users, but only to a small number of users whose accounts have been flagged. The company emphasized that this data collection is necessary for investigating security issues, preventing violations of the terms of service, and ensuring regulatory compliance.

This move comes amid recent tensions with the Trump administration and various legal and regulatory pressures. Anthropic uses Persona as its identity verification service provider, adding that this is part of regular checks to maintain the integrity and safety of the platform.
