Google Translate 20th Anniversary: Fun Facts, Tips, and New Features

To mark its 20th anniversary, Google Translate has unveiled a pronunciation practice feature for Android. It supports English, Spanish, and Hindi in the US and India, with AI analyzing pronunciation and giving instant feedback.

The translation engine started with statistical machine translation in 2006, shifted to neural machine translation in 2016, and now leverages Gemini models and the latest TPUs to deliver more natural translations and contextual understanding. The existing context-enhancing features "ask" and "understand" were also highlighted.

The scale of the service is significant. Translate supports about 250 languages and over 60,000 language pairs, reaching 95% of the world's population, with more than 1 billion people requesting translation help every month. The most translated language pair is English-Spanish, followed by English-Indonesian, Portuguese, Arabic, Turkish, English-Hindi, Bengali, and Malayalam.

Usage is expanding into travel, learning, and real-time conversation.

• Live translate helps with real-time conversations through headphones, preserving the original speaker's tone and rhythm.
• More than a third of all sessions run longer than 5 minutes, being used for interviews, family conversations, and cultural exchange.
• About a third of users of the Practice feature use it for language learning, and offline translation is available on Android and iOS.
• Lens and Circle to Search instantly translate menus, signs, lyrics, and K-beauty product text.
• AI Mode in Search is expanding its coverage to include Gen Alpha slang, emoji, and ASL translation.

The most translated phrase remains "Thank you," followed by "How are you?", "I love you", "Hello", and "Please".
