Notes on the Amazon vs. Perplexity Lawsuit

Recently, web browser technology has been evolving into Agentic Browsers that interact with websites on their own based on user instructions. Since these agents use the existing UI (links, buttons, etc.) as is, websites do not need to provide separate AI-specific features.

However, Amazon has filed a lawsuit against Perplexity's AI-based browser, Comet. According to Amazon's claims, Perplexity does not transparently disclose when the Comet agent is active, and instead disguises it as if it were a regular user using Google Chrome to access the system.

Amazon points out that this behavior causes the following serious problems:

• Security risk: There is a risk that cybercriminals could exploit vulnerabilities in the AI agent to steal customers' personal data
• Loss of data control: Because it is impossible to identify who the AI agent is, it becomes difficult to control server access and protect customer data
• Degraded user experience: It disrupts the personalized shopping experience and interferes with service operations

This dispute is a symbolic case illustrating the fundamental conflict of rights between the advancement of AI agent technology and website operators.
