GM to deploy Gemini across 4 million vehicles

GM will deploy Google Gemini via OTA to approximately 4 million 2022 model year and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC vehicles in the US. It replaces the existing Google Assistant, and applies to vehicles equipped with Google Built-in.

To use it, OnStar connection, Google Play sign-in in the vehicle, and US English settings are required, and the rollout will proceed in the US first over several months. For 2025 model year and newer models, it's included in OnStar Basics, available for 8 years at no additional charge.

GM views this as a shift from a command-based voice assistant to conversational AI.

• Handling complex requests like route changes and sending texts
• Integration with Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, HBO Max, Hulu, and Prime Video
• Location- and context-aware responses through web search

GM has also previewed a more deeply integrated proprietary AI assistant reflecting OnStar Intelligence, expected later this year. However, since GM and OnStar were sanctioned by the FTC in 2025 for selling location and driving data, how privacy controls and consent procedures are actually implemented is a key issue with this Gemini rollout.
