GitHub Copilot Switches to Usage-Based Billing

Starting June 1, 2026, GitHub Copilot will change all plans to usage-based billing. The existing premium request system will be replaced by GitHub AI Credits, with usage calculated based on each model's public API rates and input, output, cached tokens.

GitHub explained that Copilot has evolved beyond a simple editor assistant into an agentic platform that performs long, multi-step coding sessions and repository-level tasks. Monthly subscription fees remain the same, but each plan will include monthly AI Credits, with additional usage billed separately.

• Copilot Pro: $10/month with $10 worth of AI Credits
• Copilot Pro+: $39/month with $39 worth of AI Credits
• Copilot Business: $19/user/month with $19 worth of AI Credits
• Copilot Enterprise: $39/user/month with $39 worth of AI Credits

Monthly Pro/Pro+ users will be automatically switched over on June 1, while annual Pro/Pro+ users will keep the existing PRU system until their plan expires. The existing fallback to lower-tier models will be removed, and admins will be able to set budgets at the enterprise, cost center, and user level. Copilot code review will now also consume GitHub Actions minutes.
