Meta Invests $50 Billion in Louisiana AI Data Center

Meta announced it will expand the Hyperion supercluster, currently under construction in Richland Parish, Louisiana, to 5GW scale. This is the largest data center in Meta's history and one of the largest AI infrastructure projects in the world.

Key details are as follows:

• Surging costs: The project's projected cost, initially estimated at $10 billion when construction began in 2024, has increased 5-fold to $50 billion in just two years.
• Power capacity: The facility is being significantly expanded from its previous computing capacity of over 2GW, and will supply the massive power required for training large language models (LLMs).
• Policy support: The state of Louisiana passed legislation to attract data centers, offering a 20-year sales tax exemption for facilities built before 2029.

This massive investment has brought a huge influx of capital, but it has also become a point of controversy, raising issues of reduced tax revenue and conflicting interests within the local community.
