Claude Usage in Canada: Insights from Anthropic's Economic Index

According to Anthropic's Economic Index, Canada accounts for 2.6% of global Claude.ai traffic, ranking 8th in overall usage. Notably, the Anthropic AI Usage Index (AUI), which reflects usage relative to population, stands at 4.4—more than 4 times higher than expected.

Adoption within Canada tends to be regionally concentrated. Four provinces—Ontario (43.9%), Quebec, British Columbia, and Alberta—account for approximately 94% of the country's total usage. In particular, British Columbia recorded usage 1.4 times higher than expected relative to its population.

This high adoption rate appears to be closely tied to industry structure rather than simply income levels. States with a larger professional, scientific, and technical services sector showed higher Claude usage, consistent with prior research findings that adoption increases when a model's capabilities align with the composition of the workforce.

Key usage patterns are as follows:

• By purpose: work (34–40%), learning (13–18%), and personal use (44–51%).
• Notable feature: unlike English-speaking countries, there is a high share of document translation, which is analyzed to be linked to Canada's official languages policy (bilingualism).
