Introduction of Parental Controls

OpenAI has launched new Parental Controls to help families safely guide how ChatGPT is used at home. Parents can link their account with a teen's account to manage customized, age-appropriate settings.

With the September 30, 2025 update, parental controls were also introduced to the Sora app. Parents can adjust settings for Sora's non-personalized feed, whether direct messages (DMs) can be sent or received, and how content scrolling works.

Once accounts are linked, enhanced protections are automatically applied to teen accounts. Exposure to graphic content, viral challenges, sexual/violent roleplay, and extreme beauty standards is restricted to provide an age-appropriate experience.

In addition, parents can directly configure the following detailed features:

• Set Quiet hours
• Disable Voice mode
• Turn off the Memory feature
• Remove image generation capability
• Exclude from model training

Notably, a new notification system has also been built so that if a teen shows signs of a risky situation, such as indications of self-harm, the system recognizes this and immediately alerts parents via email, text, and push notification.
